Book Review:  “Eat to Thrive During Menopause”

Hello Everyone,
I recently read a book that I wanted to bring to your attention because I think it might be relevant for many of you.  Jenn Salib Huber, RD, ND’s new book “Eat to Thrive During Menopause” feels like a compilation of all of the nutrition information that I give my patients in this phase of life, plus recipes!  The book is grounded in intuitive eating and the science of nutrition, not restrictive rules.  It helps women eat for optimal health in menopause in addition to addressing specific symptoms with targeted dietary strategies.  Built around five key ingredients:  soy and phytoestrogens, protein, fiber, calcium and omega-3 fatty acids, it’s a nutrition road map with many excellent recipes so that you can put the recommendations into action right away.
If you have been wanting more concrete information about how to eat during menopause to stay healthy and minimize symptoms, this book is highly recommended.

I look forward to seeing you soon,

Abigail

Two Great Events This Week!

Hello Everyone,
I am excited to announce that I will be speaking at two live events this week.  The first is a film showing at the Sherbino Theater in Ridgway on May 12th called The M Factor 2:  Before the Pause at 6:30 pm.  This film shines a light on perimenopause through women’s real stories, showing how silence and stigma derail lives and why early awareness is necessary to protect women’s health, work and identity.  I will be part of a panel discussion taking place after the film with several other healthcare providers.  Entry is by donation.

The second event is The Tools for Transformation Health X Summit on May 16th in Paonia at the KVNF Community Room from 1-5:30 pm.  It’s like a TED X summit but for health and wellness.  Join us for an afternoon of inspiration and practical information to elevate your health and well-being.  Eight of us will be putting on short presentations followed by a documentary called Heal.  Enter through the back door in the alley.
Special guest; Los Angeles-based Mobility Specialist and Personal Trainer Joshua Haag, will be teaching a free workshop on Improving Spine Health and Healing Back Pain before the summit from 9-11 am at KVNF.

I hope to see you at one or both of these incredible events!

It’s Time To Do A Spring Cleanse!

Hello Everyone,
As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, a Spring Cleanse can be a great way to reduce seasonal allergy symptoms by reducing the total burden of allergens and toxins in your system.  I also recommend doing a cleanse if you are feeling tired, bloated, foggy brained or have hormonal symptoms such as PMS and acne.

The cleanse that I prescribe consists of recipes for two weeks of a clean, low allergen diet, a special protein powder to support liver detoxification, a high quality probiotic and lifestyle and movement recommendations.

Please let us know if this is something that you are interested in or have questions!

Spring Allergy Season Solutions

Hello Everyone,
With the mild weather that we are experiencing in the West this winter, spring allergy season is unexpectedly upon us causing itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, breathing difficulties, brain fog and fatigue.
Allergies happen when the immune system reacts to something in the environment as if it were a harmful pathogen, even though it might be something completely benign, like tree pollen.  This causes inflammation and the characteristic allergy symptoms.

Natural ways to address allergies include:

1.  Balancing your immune system by improving gut health.  Eat a clean diet (avoid processed foods, white flour products, sugar, fried foods, alcohol) and include naturally fermented foods such as saurkraut, kimchi, miso and kombucha which are sources of probiotics.  Probiotics balance the immune system, reducing over-reactivity to normal things in our environment.
2.  Eat local honey or bee pollen which contain tiny amounts of local plant pollens, teaching your immune system by exposing it to small amounts of the allergen daily so that it doesn’t over-react when it encounters larger amounts of the allergen.
3.  Drink Nettle leaf tea.  Nettle leaf is a natural anti-histamine and also rich in nutritional minerals.
4.  Take Vitamin C and Quercetin.  These are natural anti-histamines.
5.  Take Aller Dx.  This is a favorite fast acting Chinese herbal formula for allergy symptoms.
6.  Try Southwest Allersode.  A liquid homeopathic remedy made with tiny amounts of local Southwest allergens to reduce your sensitivity to those items.
7.  Do a cleanse.  Contact us to get started with our Two Week Spring Cleanse consisting of clean recipes, a special detox protein powder and a probiotic.

We carry all of above mentioned products to help you thrive during this season.  Let us know if you have any questions or would like us to set something aside for you.

Deciphering Digestive Symptoms for Relief Audio Recording

Hello Everyone,
I heard from a number of you who are not on Instagram that you would like to hear the interview that I conducted last week on Instagram Live called Deciphering Digestive Symptoms for Relief.  This was a lively hour long conversation between myself and Jenn Malecha and Julie James, both Functional Medicine Nutritionists about digestive health.  We gave many helpful tips for simple strategies to improve your digestion that you can get started with right away and also dove into sophisticated testing available to get to the bottom of more complex situations.  I hope you enjoy the recording.

Please contact me with any questions or if you would like to schedule a time to talk about your digestion!
